Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani says the damning report submitted by the CBN Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, must not be suppressed.
Sani gave the warning in an X post on Sunday.
President Bola Tinubu constituted the CBN Special Investigator to probe the apex bank’s activities under former Governor, Godwin Emefiele in July.
The CBN Special Investigator submitted his final report tagged, ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable offences)’ to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, December 20.
In the report, the special investigator stated that Emefiele illegally lodged billions of naira in foreign currencies in no fewer than 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China without the approval of the apex bank’s board of directors and the CBN Investment Committee.
The report also detailed impropriety committed by Emefiele’s CBN concerning Titan Trust Bank’s acquisition of Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN) in 2021.
Furthermore, it stated that the controversial naira redesign policy undertaken by the CBN under Emefiele was directed by a presidential aide, Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, rather than President Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting to the revelations, Sani said, “The CBN special investigation is a commendable job by this administration.
“But it must not be suppressed or killed by political pressures, correctness considerations or party solidarity.
“It must not be kept to dust out of fear of political, regional, religious or ethnic blackmail or backlash.
“It must not end up in hollow public outrage. It must not just be for the media hype that will eventually fade.
“It must not target some culprits and spare others for political convenience.
“The courage to start and conduct the investigation should be followed by the will to sanctions those involved and recover Nigeria’s collective plundered wealth.”
