Diego Costa can’t keep scoring like this, Mourinho warns.

2 Min Read

Jose Mourinho hailed his hat-trick hero Diego Costa but believes the hot streak in front of goal could end soon.

The Spain international bagged a treble in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Swansea at Stamford Bridge, taking his tally to seven in four games.

Mourinho has refused to single out Costa for individual praise and insists that anyone would thrive in the Blues’ set-up.

He said: “If the team plays well, Diego has to score goals. Seven goals in four games is too much. We do not expect that after eight matches he has 14 goals. I think it’s asking too much. I’m not expecting that.

“If he keeps scoring, then his goals mean points and they will help the team into the top places of the table.

“Seven goals in four matches has surprised me because it’s something that is not normal. It is not cyclical. You cannot repeat it. Maybe in the next four matches he will score two goals.

“But he is comfortable in the team. The team was building and waiting for a certain type of striker.

“And now I think everybody knows that Chelsea did the right thing by waiting for him and not going to the market in the summer of 2013 or January this year just to buy a striker. Chelsea did the right thing by waiting.”

Mourinho was asked if there are any comparisons with his £32 million signing and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

He said: “Didier’s start was 10 years ago. It’s not fair to compare. Didier had a fantastic career here.

“Diego has shown he can have the same kind or career. But we don’t want to compare careers .

“Didier played for eight or nine years for a certain type of team. And Costa has come into a completely different one.”
