2 Min Read

Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has opened up about his relationship with former Lagos State Governor and political heavyweight, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Seun Kuti revealed that Tinubu served as his political mentor.

Seun Kuti

Seun Kuti explained that he shares a strong bond with Tinubu, referring to the prominent politician as his “uncle.” He emphasized that Tinubu played a crucial role as a mentor during his formative years.

Kuti also took the opportunity to highlight Tinubu’s role in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. He noted that Tinubu was a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which played a significant role in fighting for democracy in Nigeria after the military annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was widely believed to have been won by Chief MKO Abiola.

He shared insights into his close association with prominent democracy advocates, including his uncle Beko Ransome-Kuti, Wole Soyinka, and Tinubu, all of whom contributed to shaping his understanding of political ideas and democracy.

Seun Kuti also recounted his performance at rallies during Tinubu’s first term as Governor of Lagos State. While he acknowledged a close personal relationship, he emphasized that it wasn’t necessarily political, and he hasn’t visited Tinubu’s house in years except when there were national issues to discuss.
