The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has said that the Senate is not in crisis, noting that the Senators are united and matured even amidst disagreements.

Akpabio said this after closed-door talks with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

The Senate President’s visit comes barely 24 hours after the senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, stormed out of the chamber.

Ndume’s action which was triggered by how Akpabio treated the motion he raised on Tuesday which led the Senate to dissolve into a closed-door session.

Speaking on what transpired in the Senate, Akpabio said that the disagreement between members of the red chamber cannot deteriorate into them having a physical fight because they are too mature for such.

“In the parliament, sometimes you disagree to agree. But we will never get to the point of throwing chairs. The Senate is too mature, full of matured people.”

He also dismissed rumours of crisis in the legislature, noting that they are all working together for one accord.

He further explained that, even if some people disagree with some of the happenings in the Senate, it is only the majority decision that is going to prevail in the end.

He also stated that any arising disagreements are swiftly handled in closed sessions, ensuring unity and solidarity are maintained.

He further noted that their primary assignment as senators is for the interest of Nigeria, “we are politicians, no permanent hatred but permanent interest. That interest is the interest of the nation.”

The Senate President also highlighted the Senate’s role to be; to support the President and his administration through legislation and oversight functions, which will in turn move the country forward.

Akpabio also revealed that, in his meeting with President Tinubu, he discussed the upcoming 10th Assembly retreat taking place in Akwa Ibom State.
