Manchester City has reached a verbal agreement with Wolves for the transfer of midfielder Matheus Nunes at a fee of £47.2 million (€55 million).

This comes after City’s initial bid for the 25-year-old was rejected by Wolves, prompting Nunes to go on strike in his desire to secure the move to the Etihad.

Nunes, a Portugal international, was notably absent from Wolves’ squad during their Carabao Cup second-round victory against Blackpool on Tuesday.

The Midlands club will make a small profit on Nunes, whom they signed from Sporting Lisbon last year for an initial £38 million, which could rise to £42.2 million with add-ons.

As part of a separate agreement, City’s midfielder Tommy Doyle will join Wolves on loan for the remainder of the season.

Wolves will have the option to make the loan deal permanent for £5 million. City has also negotiated a significant sell-on clause for Doyle, with Wolves responsible for covering his wages during the loan period.

Doyle who began his football journey with City’s academy at the age of eight, has made appearances in seven competitive matches under Pep Guardiola.

However, he has not played for City since the 2020/21 season, spending loan spells at clubs like Hamburg, Cardiff, and Sheffield United.

During his loan stint with Sheffield United last season, Doyle played a crucial role in their automatic promotion to the Premier League, contributing three goals and four assists in 33 Championship matches.

He also played a part in England’s Under-21 European Championships victory in July, featuring as a substitute in the final against Spain.
