FCT Minister Wike visits scene of building collapse, promises to clear victims’ medical bills

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the victims of Wednesday’s building collapse in the city.

The two-storey shopping located at the Lagos Crescent, in Garki 2, Abuja, caved in around 11.30 pm following a heavy downpour, it was learnt.

Confirming the incident on Thursday morning, the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said 37 persons had been evacuated, out of which two died.

Wike, who visited the site on Thursday afternoon, was accompanied by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Bariya Mahmoud, and the Permanent Secretary of FCTA, Olusade Adesola.

The minister, who described the incident as unfortunate, directed the Permanent Secretary to facilitate the prompt payment of the hospital bills of the 35 survivors.

“It is quite unfortunate that we woke up this morning to hear this very disturbing news,” he said.

“I am grateful to all rescue agencies, especially NEMA. It’s unfortunate that two persons are dead.

“I will speak to the permanent secretary to make sure we pay the hospital bills of those who are rescued and that should be done immediately,” the minister said.

The new minister used the opportunity to restate that taking action against poorly constructed buildings was not a personal vendetta against anyone, but a move to save as many lives as possible from disaster.
