Cutting electricity to Niger affecting schools, hospitals, homes, not military junta – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani

Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has said that Nigeria’s decision to cut electricity supply to Niger Republic as a means of putting pressure on the military junta is not achieving its intended purpose.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter on Friday, he said that the action is having devastating effects on public facilities like hospitals, schools, homes and offices.

He warned the Nigerian government and the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) against any ill-conceived actions against the defiant military junta.

According to Sani, cutting electricity to the country could increase Niger citizens’ solidarity with the military junta, which overthew the democratically-elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum and seized power on July 26.

“Cutting off electricity supplies to Niger Republic is affecting their hospitals, schools, homes and offices. This is not putting pressure on the military junta but punishing the masses of that country and creating resentment against our country.

“The action taken by Nigeria and ECOWAS  is further pushing Nigeriens to rally round their military Government. France, Ecowas & Nigeria are pushing them to learn to live without dependence,” Sani said.
