The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has explained why the Senate did not grill ministerial nominee, Nyesom Wike, during his appearance before the Upper Chamber for his ministerial screening.

The former Rivers governor was asked to take a “bow and go” after his brief profile was read and following an appeal by Senator Barinada Mpigi (PDP – Rivers Southeast).

Mpigi, who spoke on behalf of lawmakers representing River State, told Nigerians that Wike was the best governor in the state.

“His Excellency former Governor Nyesom Wike is our best in Rivers State. He is our leader and role model.

“Distinguished senators, we employ that you should let him just take a bow and go.

“His resume is insufficient to enumerate the works that he has done,” the lawmaker had said.

On his part, Akpabio said the senators did not go through the trouble of grilling Wike because the Senate had his records, having formerly served as a minister.

He said Wike had appeared before the Senate for screening when he was nominated as a minister by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Having been nominated again for a ministerial position, there is no point asking him much questions,” Akpabio said.

Wike was Minister of State for Education minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
