The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has disbanded the police team attached to the Edo State Police Command which was responsible for running over a citizen, Success Ehimare, with their operational vehicle in Ekpoma area of the state.
Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
In a scene that shocked the nation last Thursday, the police team in a Toyota Sienna vehicle were caught in an eyewitness video running handcuffed Ehimare over.
The policemen involved in the incident were identified by the Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chidi Nwabuzor.
On Tuesday, July 4, Adejobi confirmed that the errant cops had reported to Abuja for disciplinary action.
In today’s statement, the FPRO disclosed that IGP Egbetokun disbanded the Edo police team in a “bold move to address the unprofessional conduct” of the policemen.
“This step aims to regularise and standardise police operations in the axis; and restore public trust in the Police Force.
“Additionally, the operatives involved are currently facing disciplinary charges and administrative procedures.
“This move underscores the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions which will never be tolerated in the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and ethics, while urging members of the public to always cooperate with Police Officers in the discharge of their statutory duties,” Adejobi said.
