The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the policemen caught on video running a man over with their operational vehicle in Edo State to report to the Force headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
A viral video captured the moment the policemen in their Toyota Sienna vehicle ran the man over as he laid in front of the vehicle allegedly following an altercation that ensued when the victim refused the policemen’s move to search his phone.
In the incident that occurred on Thursday, June 29, a crowd can be seen milling around the vehicle while verbally reprimanding the policemen for their action.
The incident also sparked outrage on social media.
In his statement, the police spokesman disclosed that the errant cops have been in detention in Edo State since the incident occurred.
He added that they were to report to the Force headquarters on Monday, June 3, for further action.
“Members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, are implored to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality,” Adejobi said.
