Humza Yousaf has officially taken become Scotland’s new first minister, replacing Nicola Sturgeon.

The ceremony took place at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Wednesday morning.

Yousaf, 37, clinched leadership of the Scotland National Party (SNP) on Monday, after defeating rivals Kate Forbes and Ash Regan.

He has officially become Keeper of the Scottish Seal having taken his oath of office and pledged his allegiance to the King.

As Keeper of the Scottish Seal, Yousaf now has the authority to make decisions on behalf of the crown, which effectively means he can lead the country with the support of the Scottish Parliament, Sky News reported.

Yousaf is the youngest person to hold the post of Scotland’s first minister and also made history as the first from an ethnic minority background to be appointed to the position.

He has hit the ground running, naming his cabinet shortly after.
