Aminu Muhammad deserves public apology, compensation – SERAP tells Aisha Buhari

2 Min Read

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on First Lady Aisha Buhari to issue a public apology and pay compensation to Aminu Muhammad, a university student whom she got arrested and arraigned in court.

SERAP said this in a tweet on Friday after it emerged that the First Lady had withdrawn the case in court.

The police was prosecuting the 500-level student of Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court.

It was learnt that prosecution counsel Fidelis Ogbobe withdrew the case on behalf of Mrs Buhari.

Ogbobe said the First Lady, being the mother of the nation, decided to withdraw the case following the intervention of “well-meaning Nigerians.”

Recall that civil society organisations, including SERAP, and other Nigerians had condemned the student’s arrest and alleged brutalisation.

Reacting to the withdrawal, the group described it as “welcome”.

“BREAKING: We welcome the withdrawal by the first lady Mrs Aisha Buhari of the bogus charges against critic, Aminu Mohammed.

“He should never have been detained or charged in the first place. Now, Aminu deserves a public apology, and an adequate compensation,” SERAP said.
