Lizzo scored a political point at the MTV Video Music Award (VMAs) on Sunday night when she urged fans to vote and “make changes to laws that are oppressing us”, or so she thought.

The 34-year-old, who got the Moon Person for Video for Good (for her hit, “About Damn Time”), urged the fans to continue to vote in the MTV awards but also not neglect their civic duty.

“Your vote means everything to me, it means everything to making a change in this country … When you’re voting for your favorite artist, vote to change some of these laws that are oppressing us,” she said to cheers from the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The artist admitted she wasn’t sure what the moonman was celebrating, but she was grateful to her fans for showing up and voting for her to win the trophy.

However, some netizens took to Twitter to poke fun at the “Good as Hell” singer. over ‘vote or be oppressed’ speech, daring her to name one of such laws.

@sloppyjacques queried, “which laws?”

@Anthonyisback33 wrote, “Name one law at least. At least point people in a direction 🤣🤣🤣🤣”

@irl_sumo wrote, “She doesn’t look oppressed.”

Another commentator drew attention to Lizzo’s expensive designer clothing as proof she wasn’t oppressed.

Lizzo wore a black Jean Paul Gaultier Couture strapless gown with billowing fabric bunched across her chest and triple gold hoop earrings to match a lip ring.

@flux_fred wrote, “I feel oppressed – also I’m wearing 10 to 15 million dollars in clothing and accessories…”

Yet another commentator faulted celebrities for displaying faux camaraderie with those not as fortunate.

@Scratch_Point_Z wrote, “We live in a world where celebrities who live a life of luxury the majority will never know preach about being oppressed and people actually cheer as though it’s real.”
