VIDEO: Moment protesting Sri Lankans took over presidential swimming pool

1 Min Read

Footage has emerged of the moment Sri Lankan protesters who burst through the gates of the presidential residence in Colombo, calling for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, swam in the presidential swimming pool.

The demonstrations over worsening economic crises in the South Asian country of 22 million people commenced on Saturday.

More than 100,000 people massed on the president’s residence before finally gaining entrance and overrunning it after breaking through security cordons manned by police and other security agencies.

Reacting to the protests, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed readiness to resign to pave way for an all-party government.

“To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government,” Wickremesinghe wrote on Twitter.
“To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister,” Wickremesinghe said.
