The Department of State Services (DSS) and the police on Tuesday harassed and chased journalists away from the premises of the Federal High Court, Abuja, where the trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu is billed to commence today.
The Herald can report that Tuesday’s incident was not the only time that security operatives would block journalists from accessing the courtroom to cover the proceedings in Kanu’s terrorism trial.
Civil society organisations, socio-cultural groups like Afenifere and Ohanaeze and prominent legal minds have in the past berated the security agencies for preventing coverage of Kanu’s trial.
Meanwhile, a popular Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome will lead Kanu’s defence team going forward.
Lead counsel for the embattled IPOB leader, Ifeanyi Ejiofor made the announcement on Tuesday.
“Yes, I’m now in the legal team and that’s why you’re seeing me in court,” Ozekhome also said.
Kanu’s trial is set to commence today before Justice Binta Nyako.
DSS operatives had brought the embattled separatist leader to the court around 7am.
Lawyers and journalists present at the court were frisked by the security operatives.
