Nnamdi Kanu will soon be released; threats won’t stop me from defending him – Lawyer

Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Counsel to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, says his client will soon be freed as there were no strong allegations to get him convicted.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday, June 22 remanded Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) until July 26.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami SAN had disclosed that the IPOB leader was arrested two days before then.

According to Ejiofor, there were no strong allegations to convict Kanu in detention for long.

He said that the Biafran agitator’s supporters should be hopeful and pray for him to be released soon.

“We’re in high spirit that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will soon come out of detention sooner than expected, and better too. It’s one thing for allegations to be made, it’s another thing to establish it. But I don’t think there’s anything strong enough to convict him,” Ejiofor said.

He alleged that Kanu has been denied access to his family, describing it as “mental torture”.

Despite this, he said, there has been great improvement in the IPOB leader’s health.

“There’s no cause for worry. His health is improving. Only that he has not been allowed access to his family, particularly his wife and children, which I see as another level of mental torture.

“But we’re doing all we can to ensure he’s transferred to appropriate custodian pending when his trial commences. We’re also making efforts to get medical experts to ensure his health gets stable,” Ejiofor stated.

He said that no amount of threats or intimidation would stop him from defending Kanu, saying he was appointed by God to defend his client.

On expectations for the commencement of Kanu’s trial on July 26, Ejiofor said, “Nothing extraordinary will happen that day. That I can assure you. We’ll be there as usual to entertain applications. If there’s any amendment, we’ll take it up from there.

“What we have is still the 3-count charge. We also have application overdue for hearing, that is the invasion of his house where 28 persons were killed.

“We have all the pictorial evidences. We’ll tender them before the court so the court will look at them to ensure justice.”
