Co-founder of Black Lives Matter (BLM), Patrisse Cullors, 37, has resigned as Executive Director.

She had led the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for nearly six years.

However, she said she would be leaving the role on Friday, May 28 to focus on a book and TV deal.

Cullors said she felt it was the right time to move on having created the infrastructure and support needed for the foundation to thrive without her necessarily running the show.

However, she is leaving amid harsh criticisms that trailed expose of her lavish lifestyle.

There has been higher public scrutiny of the group’s finances since it emerged that Cullors has been acquiring real estate running into millions of dollars.

She reportedly bought four luxury homes for $3.2 million in the US.

In a statement, Cullors said her departure was not influenced by the criticisms, which she described as right-wing attacks aimed at discrediting her character.

BLM Foundation said in February that it raised $90 million in donations last year. This followed the May 2020 killing of George Floyd which generated massive protests that had BLM in a lead role.

The foundation said $60 million of the funds was left after settling operating expenses, grants to Black-led organisations and other charitable giving.

However, there have been demands for the foundation to support families of Black victims killed by police, although the foundation said it had been doing so without publicising it.
