Why Nigeria barred travellers from India, Turkey, Brazil

PSC on COVID-19 Chairman, Boss Mustapha

The Federal Government said it banned flights from India, Turkey and Brazil following the increased death toll caused by COVID-19 pandemic in those countries.

Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee (PSC), on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha stated this in a new travel advisory on international flights which takes effect today.

Mustapha, who is also Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said that all travellers that have been to either of those three countries within 14 days of their intended arrival date in Nigeria would be barred.

However, he said, the ban did was not applicable to passengers that transited through those countries.

According to him, all airlines must comply with the directive or risk $3,500 fine for each defaulting passenger.

“Non-Nigerians will be denied entry and returned to the country of embarkation at cost to the airline. Nigerians and those with permanent resident permit shall undergo seven days of mandatory quarantine in a Government approved facility at the point-of-entry city and at cost to the passenger,” he said.
