Channels TV: SERAP Tells FG To Lift Suspension Or Risk Legal Action

1 Min Read

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) has demanded the immediate lifting of the suspension and N5 million fine imposed on the popular television station, Channels TV.

The civil society organisation made the demand in a tweet on Monday evening, hours after the sanction imposed on the station became public knowledge.

The Herald had reported that the broadcast regulator imposed the sanction after Channels allegedly breached the broadcast code.

This was contained in a letter signed by the Acting Director-General of NBC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba.

According to the letter, Channels Television on its 7 pm live broadcast programme of Sunday, 25th April, 2021, allowed a leader of the proscribed IPOB to make secessionist and inciting declarations on air without any form of reprimand from the station.

Recall that Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful was interviewed on the station on Sunday.

Reacting, SERAP wrote, “BREAKING: We’ve urged President Buhari and the NBC to immediately lift the arbitrary, unconstitutional and illegal suspension and fine of @channelstv purportedly for breaching the broadcast code. We’ll take legal action if the decision is not reversed within 48 hours.”
