The Executive Vice Chairman of Manchester United, Ed Woodward, has resigned.
An English accountant and investment banker, he was appointed to the position in 2012, having previously overseen commercial and media operations at the club.
He was due to quit the position at the end of 2021.
Although the reason for the 49-year-old’s resignation could not be immediately confirmed, it is believed to be connected to the controversy surrounding the European Super League.
The club’s fans heavily criticised its board for agreeing to be a part of the breakaway league.
Legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson also joined critics of the Super League.
“Talk of a Super League is a move away from 70 years of European club football.
“Both as a player for a provincial team Dunfermline in the 60s and as a manager at Aberdeen winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup, for a small provincial club in Scotland it was like climbing Mount Everest,” he said.
