EEDC Management Donates Cash, Off-sets Medical Bill of Employee

4 Min Read

The management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has donated cash and off-set the medical bill of injured staff member of the company, Mr Obiajulu Atta, an Operations Technician.

The Chairman of EEDC, Sir Emeka Offor, presented the cash donation when he paid a visit to Atta in his hospital bed at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Ituku-Ozalla,  near Enugu, on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that at about 2:30 p.m. on March 16, Atta, who is attached to Umudike Service Centre under Umuahia District, Abia, was attacked by a customer.

The customer, whose identity is not disclosed, was to be disconnected for non-payment of electricity bill.

But he got infuriated, went for a matchet to cut Atta’s head but ended up cutting one of his hands after a struggle.

Offor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Chris Ezike, said that the entire company, the board and management of EEDC, felt the pain Atta was going through after being inflicted with high degree of injury.

The chairman said, “What happened to you happened to all of us; as far as you are an employee of EEDC and carrying out your legitimate duty nobody has the right to molest or inflict high degree of injure on you.

“Sir Emeka Offor sent us to tell you that the board and management of EEDC is with you. We wish you well and wish you steady recovery.

“We are also reassuring you that whoever this culprit is and his cohorts will be brought to justice.

“Tomorrow, we will be heading to Umuahia to interface with the police and other security agencies to facilitate and fast track the arrest of the culprit(s).

“What he did was callous, unacceptable to humanity and to the company as well.

“This he did without any provocation from you, you were not armed but only trying to discharge your legitimate duty,’’ he said.

Offor, who did not disclose the amount of the cash, said that those that attacked both EEDC staff members and installations would be dealt with and prosecuted.

“As a company, we are investing massively in electricity supply to better the living condition of Nigerians in our franchise area and expect them to reciprocate by paying their bills and protecting our installations,’’ he said.

Responding, Atta appreciated the board and management of the company for the cash donation and taking care of his medical expenses.

“I am so delighted to see you people and that the company is standing by me at this critical time.

“I thank you all for all these things done for me and the chairman taking personal commitment to see to my quick recovery,’’ he said.
