Junaid Mohammed

Second Republic lawmaker and major critic of the Buhari administration, Dr. Junaid Mohammed is dead.

The Kano-based politician and socio-political critic died aged 71 on Thursday.

Recall that Junaid Mohammed contested as Vice-Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2019 presidential election.

Confirming the demise, the deceased’s brother, Ahmed Salik said it occurred on Thursday evening.

He added that the deceased would be buried according to Islamic rites on Friday morning.

Studying medicine in the 1970s in the defunct USSR, Junaid Mohammed returned to Nigeria and was a Member in the House of Representatives in the Second Republic that was truncated by Buhari in 1983.

A die-hard government critic, the doctor-cum-politician was also critical of the administrations of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

He was the first to accuse the Buhari administration of being the most nepotistic in Nigeria’s history, identifying how several key government functionaries got their posts because of their personal ties to either the President himself or his powerful nephew, Mamman Daura.
