Sheikh Gumi vows to visit Kagara over schoolchildren’s abduction

Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said he would visit Kagara, the Niger State community where 27 students were abducted early Wednesday.

Speaking with Daily Trust, Sheikh Gumi described the abduction as “unfortunate”.

He said he was heading to Kebbi State but took a detour to visit Niger State over the incident.

While in the state capital, Minna, the cleric said, he visited Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello and would proceed to the community where the students were abducted.

Sheikh Gumi said that the visit was his first to Niger State.

He added that his visit to the governor was to discuss holistic solutions to the insecurity problem in the state.

Recall that Sheikh Gumi in January visited bandit leaders in Zamfara forests and appealed to them to sheath their swords.

The popular cleric disclosed after the visits that insurgency, and not banditry as earlier believed, was going on in the state.

He, therefore, appealed to the authorities to grant the bandits amnesty before they could get the chance to be radicalised by Islamic fundamentalists.

Sheikh Gumi said that the situation could become “difficult to control” if fundamentalists got to the bandits first.
