The Senate in a resolution on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity in the country.
The Senate made the call Wednesday hours after 42 people, including 27 students, were abducted from Government Science College, Kagara in Niger State by armed bandits.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator for Niger East, Mohammed Sani Musa, who lamented the pervasive insecurity in the land.
Reacting to Wednesday’s abductions, Senator Musa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), lamented confirmed that the bandits invaded the school in military fatigues.
He said it was the constitutional responsibility of the government to ensure the welfare and security of the citizenry.

The Senate also charged President Buhari to implement the report of its ad-hoc panel on security challenges in the country.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Government said it has taken concrete security measures to ensure safety in the state and safe return of the abducted 27 students of the Government Science College, Kagara.
The students, three staff and 12 families of the college in Rafi Local Government Area of the state were abducted in the early hours of Wednesday.
In a news conference in Minna on Wednesday, Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello said that his administration had taken concrete security measures to ensure the safe return of the students.
