Blasphemy: Court dismisses death sentence on Kano singer

A Kano State High Court has faulted the death sentence passed on Kano-based singer, Aminu Yahaya Sharif for blasphemy and ordered a retrial.

The court also dismissed the 10-year imprisonment passed on 13-year-old Omar Farouq who was convicted alongside Sharif for blasphemy by the state’s Upper Sharia Court in August 2020.

The appeal division of the court presided over by State Chief Judge Nuraddeen Sagir set aside the judgement on Sharif on Thursday.

Justice Sagir ruled that the trial court’s proceedings were characterised by irregularities.

The court ruled for the retrial of the 22-year-old Sharif’s case after the singer challenged the initial verdict.

The judge ruled that the convict should be given full legal representation and that a different judge should try the case.
