US President Donald Trump will not be attending his successor, Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, becoming the fourth president not to do so.

Trump made the announcement in a tweet on Friday.

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” the 74-year-old wrote.

The White House Historical Association disclosed that the incumbent would not be the first president not to attend his successor’s inauguration.

Presidents John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Johnson also chose not to witness their successors taking the oath of office.

Biden’s inauguration is expected to signal the end of an exhausting quest for the presidency characterised by claims of electoral fraud from the incumbent and Republican Party candidate.

Trump had been blamed for the violence that ensued when his supporters stormed the Capitol just as Congress met on Wednesday to certify the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden.

Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, Dustin Sternbeck confirmed that four people were killed in the incident.

Major social media networks, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, suspended Trump’s accounts on their platforms in relation to the violence, which the president later condemned.

The president’s tweet announcing that he would be missing Biden’s inauguration was his third since Twitter lifted a 12-hour suspension of the account.
