Commotion Ensues As Amotekun Kills 2 Persons In Open Fire

2 residents of Asaka area in Ibadan, Oyo state, were gunned down by the freshly set-up South-West security group, Amotekun.

Sources confirmed that the killing, which happened on Thursday, occurred at Ike-Olu Junction in the Asaka area of the state capital, Ibadan.

The victims were identified as Akin Owoaga and Afeez Lotto.

Several others were left injured after the incident occurred.

According to sources, the killing was carried out by a certain, Sikiru Apanpa, a member of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC), who was recently drafted into Amotekun.

The source went on to explain that the melee began when youths from the area started arguing over a particular matter.

One of the victims, Lotto, called in the Amotekun operative, Apanpa, to help calm the rising tension.

The former OPC member-turned Amotekun, appeared on the scene, along with other personnel of the security outfit, and started shooting sporadically into the crowd.

The two victims were caught in the shooting and died on the spot.

On their way out of the community, the Amotekun personnel also shot at a certain aged man, Matthew Owolabi, at the Ike Junction.

Owolabi later reported the incident at Mapo and Babaganku Police stations.

The Nigerian Police Force, Mapo Area Command, Ibadan, reacted by apprehending one Saheed.

Saheed then called in Amotekun to make available the perpetrator of the dastardly act.

Operation Amotekun (Leopard) was established on the 9th of January 2020, by the six state governors of all the South Western states of Nigeria, namely; Lagos State, Oyo State, Ogun State, Ondo State, Osun State and Ekiti State.

The Governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi had blamed insecurity in the country as part of the reasons for their formation.

“Amotekun is a complement that will give our people confidence that they are being looked after by those they elected into office.

“So, we do not want this to create fear in the mind of anybody as we are not creating a regional police force and are fully aware of the steps we must take to have state police,” Fayemi had said.

The recent killings will surely leave question marks over the wisdom of forming the security outfit.
