2 Min Read
Senate President Ahmad Lawan

The Senate has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the nation’s service chiefs and immediately replace them with new ones.

This is the third time in 2020 that the Senate would be demanding the replacement of the nation’s service chiefs. The first two calls were ignored by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The latest call was part of the resolutions of the Upper Chamber at Tuesday’s plenary following a motion by Senator Kashim Shettima (APC – Borno Central) on the recent killing of 43 rice farmers in his state.

Shettima is the immediate-past Governor of Borno State.

Acccording to the Senate, President Buhari must also immediately rejig the nation’s security architecture.

The Senate said that this had become necessary to protect Nigerians from wanton killings, kidnapping for ransom, and other security challenges.

The Ahmed Lawan-led Senate also demanded a probe into allegations of corruption and financial leakage levelled against some top hierarchy of the military.

The Senate further harped on the need for Nigeria to negotiate with the country’s neigbours on multinational cooperation in order to strengthen the war against insurgency.
