Updated: ASUU Agrees With FG To Suspend Lingering Strike

2 Min Read

Respite will soon come the way of public university students as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has agreed to suspend its eight-month strike.

The union reached the agreement with a Federal Government negotiation team led by Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on Friday night.

This is just as the Federal Government was said to have increased the total incentives offered to the union to N70 billion.

A breakdown of the figure showed that FG agreed to pay N40 billion as the Earned Allowance of ASUU members and N30 billion for the revitalisation of the university system.

FG also agreed to pay the arrears of salaries of the lecturers before December 31.

Recall that ASUU proceeded on an indefinite strike in March, claiming the Federal Government failed to fulfil a 2009 agreement and tried to impose the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) on the union.

Last week, FG agreed with ASUU to suspend university lecturers’ IPPIS enrollment, pending when the union’s proposed payment system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) would be approved.
