5 killed as Boko Haram shoots down helicopter; Shekau boasts

Five persons have been reported killed as Boko Haram on Tuesday shot down a helicopter in Banki community, Bama local government area of Borno State.

The helicopter was said to be carrying Nigerien details at the time it was brought down in Banki, a border town between Nigeria and Cameroon.

A source said the helicopter was shot down around 10:00 am, although it was unclear if the aircraft was carrying military personnel or civilians.

Troops reportedly mobilised to the scene immediately the incident was reported.

The Nigerian Army spokesman, Sagir Musa, has yet to confirm the incident.

The United Nations (UN) recently placed a temporary no flying restriction on all local helicopter services in the northern Borno after a fierce gunfight between soldiers and armed groups on Thursday, November 11.

In July, passengers aboard an aid helicopter narrowly escaped being killed as Boko Haram brought down the helicopter heading to northern Borno.

Meanwhile, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau has boasted that he cannot be arrested because he is doing God’s work.

He stated this in a new 30-minute video in response to the Nigerian Army’s publication of a fresh wanted list for him and 85 of his top men.

“Nobody can apprehend me, because I’m doing God’s work. He will protect me like those doing similar work and seeking His protection,” Shekau said.

“I’m very sure God will protect my commanders. We are all doing God’s work.”
