“We read it in The News”, Senate Declares It was not Aware of CBN Freezing Bank Accounts of #EndSARS Promoters

The Senate on Monday declared that it was not aware of the CBN freezing bank accounts of some of the #EndSARS promoters/ front liners.

This was addressed during the appearance of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), before the APC, Ekiti Central Senate Committee led by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for his defense of the ministry’s 2021 budget estimate.

The Senate stated that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele did not inform it before taking such decisions.

The Senate also pointed out that the Judgment Debt profile of the Country had reached an “alarming and embarrassing” state and needed to be addressed immediately.

Speaking with Journalists shorty after Malami’s appearance, Senator Bamidele said that the Senate was waiting on further information as regards the issue of freezing the bank accounts of #EndSARS promoters by the CBN.

Asked what step the Senate was taking concerning the issue, Senator Bamidele stated that the matter was currently not before the red chamber.

“We read it in the news like everyone of us. Our committee is also interested in knowing what is going on in this regard. As it is our committee is neither in a position to either explain or defend”, he said.

The Senator further stated that the legislature would collaborate with the executive to find out what was truly going on.

He said, “We will reach out to the executive. If it is true, we would find out what the stakeholders in charge are trying to achieve with this”.
