Zamfara: After waiting in vain for N10m ransom, kidnappers beg abducted judge’s family for “whatever they can afford”

2 Min Read
Zamfara Governor, Bello Matawalle

Abductors of two Zamfara judges were forced to setlle for whatever their victims’ families could afford after their initial demand for N10 million ransom was unmet.

The Sharia Court judges – Salihu Abdullahi and Shafi’u Jangebe – were abducted two months ago.

They had travelled to Maradi, Niger Republic and were on their way back to Zamfara when they were accosted by the kidnappers who whisked them away to an undisclosed location.

The kidnappers thereafter contacted the victims’ families, demanding N10 million ransom for each of the judges.

After waiting in vain for the families to cough out the money, they contacted the families again, asking them to bring whatever they could afford.

A brother to one of the victims, Malam Hassan Samaru disclosed this on Thursday.

“When the bandits realized that we could not meet their demand of N20m, they finally called us and told us to bring whatever we have.

“We paid two million for the two judges and they were released,” The Punch quoted him to have said.

Samaru was also quoted to have said that seven other persons abducted alongside the judges were freed after their families paid various sums.

Zamfara is one of the Northern states experiencing heightened bandit attacks resulting in killings or kidnappings.
