Senator for Kaduna Central in the Eight Senate, Shehu Sani says Northern governors should be focusing on ending the slaughtering of their people by bandits and insurgents rather than social media regulation.
He stated this in a tweet on Tuesday in reaction to a communique issued after a meeting of the Northern Governors Forum on Monday.
In the communique, the governors expressed support for the Federal Government’s push to regulate social media.
According to the governors, social media has “devastating” effects on the nation and must be censored.
“The meeting took note of the devastating effect of the uncontrolled social media in spreading fake news. Therefore, calls for major control mechanism and censorship of the social media practice in Nigeria,” the communique read in part.
Reacting, Sani said stopping the incessant killing of their kinsmen should be the focus of the northern governors and not regulating social media.
He further urged them not to neglect the kidnapping and raping of the northern populace.
Sani said, “Northern Governors; Their Kinsmen are being slaughtered daily by Bandits & insurgents, their people are daily being Kidnapped & impoverished by ransom, their women raped & their villages are under siege. Their people live in Fear & Funerals. Yet, Social Media is their problem.”
