#EndSARS: Feeding protesters caused violence, destruction in Lagos – lawmaker

Olusegun Akande

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olusegun Akande says feeding EndSARS protesters led to widespread violence and destruction in the state.

Akande, who represents Ojo Constituency I, disclosed this at plenary on Thursday.

For nearly two weeks, Nigerian youths trooped out to protest against police brutality.

It was a carnival-like atmosphere in Lagos and many other cities where the protests held, with provision being made for feeding of protesters.

However, things turned awry in Lagos after soldiers opened fire on protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday, October 20.

There was massive looting of private and public property, with many set ablaze.

Many police stations were burnt and a warehouse storing COVID-19 palliatives looted in Mazamaza community.

Reacting, Akande said the youths ought to have known that miscreants would hijack the protests.

The lawmaker expressed dismay at the level of destruction, saying he wondered whether those behind the protests planned to “submerge” the state.

He blamed the celebrities involved in feeding the protesters.

Akande, who is a lawyer, said, “What do you expect from somebody who does not have anything to eat morning, night or who does not know when he is going to eat?

“You are providing them with food and you’re expecting this to be peaceful?

“That is the genesis of the problem.

“When you’re protesting and you’re giving them food, the miscreants that do not have money to eat, they will come.

“They wouldn’t want it to end.

“That is the beginning.

“When the celebrities were doing this, they forgot when to end it.

“They had seen it coming; they’re supposed to have stopped.”
