Hoodlums besiege Abuja industrial estate, loot warehouses

Policemen fired teargas but that was not enough to deter hoodlums bent on looting warehouses in the Idu Industrial Estate, Abuja  on Sunday.

The looters invaded the industrial estate and immediately began to loot warehouses located within the estate.

Although the focus was primarily on food items, other products such as clothing materials were not spared.

Some of the hoodlums were said to have invaded the estate with their tricycles and motorcycles with which they carted away looted items.

Looted items included bags of rice, cartons of tin tomatoes, cereals, milk, and bales of Ankara materials.

The presence of policemen did not appear to deter the hoodlums.

There has been massive looting across the country since hoodlums hijacked the peaceful EndSARS protests.

Since the looting of a COVID-19 palliative warehouse in Mazamaza area of Lagos on Thursday, similar incidents have occurred in at least 10 states.

On Saturday, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu ordered the immediate mobilisation of all police operational assets and resources to bring an end to the wanton violence, killings, looting and destruction of public and private property.

“The IGP, while noting that enough is enough to all acts of lawlessness, disruption of public peace and order and wanton violence which have resulted to indiscriminate looting of shops, malls and warehouses, damage to property and loss of lives in some parts of the country, further directs the Police strategic managers to personally lead and coordinate the operation and use all legitimate means, to halt further slide into lawlessness and brigandage,” a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba read in part.
