Punch Poll: 87% of Nigerians See Buhari as Clueless, Callous

2 Min Read

President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval rating could be said to be at an all-time low as 87 percent of Nigerians see him as a “clueless and callous” leader.

This was obtained from a poll conducted by leading Nigerian newspaper The Punch on Thursday.

Respondents were asked: “Do you consider the president as a clueless leader who does not value human lives?”

They were required to answer “Yes”, “No” or “I don’t know”.

Of the 9,600 respondents, 87 percent, representing 8352 people, said they considered the president to be clueless and callous.

However,  7 percent of the respondents, representing 672 respondents, said they did not consider the president to be clueless or callous.

In the same vein, 6 percent of respondents, representing 576 people, said they were not sure if President Buhari was callous and clueless or not.

The president has faced severe criticism over worsening socioeconomic conditions, rising public debt, exponential increase in food prices and recently his handling of the EndSARS protests.

Many Nigerians have berated the president for not being proactive in handling the protests, which later led to violence, killings and destruction of properties.

The shooting of unarmed civilians at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos by soldiers on Tuesday, October 20, further compounded the president’s woes.

Recall that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had blamed forces beyond his “direct control” for the shooting, suggesting that Buhari as the Cmmander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces was not blameless.

The shooting drew international attention on the Buhari-led federal government’s handling of the protest.
