World boxing heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua has described Tuesday night’s shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate as “horrendous”.

In the incident captured on video, armed men dressed in military fatigues opened fire on peaceful EndSARS protesters, dozens of whom died or were injured.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu blamed forces beyond his direct control for the shooting.

The governor shared photos of several injured victims being treated at various hospitals.

Joshua initially released a video on Twitter urging protesters and the government to find “a middlemen ground” but received a heavy backlash.

In follow-up tweets, he lamented the enormity of the situation and condemned the shooting incident.

He equally offered to offset medical bills of those injured at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“I’m looking at hospitals to support, along with food and care packages in the time being,” he wrote.

The British-Nigerian boxer added, “I pray God opens the gates for the heroes of Nigeria! This was never a trend for me! It’s real life and I want to learn how to make lasting change.”

Reacting to the shooting, the heavyweight champion wrote, “The situation has escalated, the violence and killings are horrendous. All because of people saying they want to live in peace?”

He added that “Change will happen! It’s time” along with an image of the Nigerian flag.
