Shehu Sani mocks Northern governors for praising SARS

Human rights activist, Shehu Sani has berated Northern governors for objecting to the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Speaking through its Chairman, Simon Lalong on Thursday, the governors opposed the wholesale disbandment of the tactical squad on the grounds that it has helped to combat insecurity in the region.

Lalong, who is the Governor of Plateau State, spoke in Abuja while fielding questions from State House correspondents after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that while the president already approved the scrapping of SARS, the governors did not subscribe to the wholesale disbandment.

According to him, the shortcomings of the squad should not lead to its scrapping but to its reformation to enable optimal performance.

The forum chairman however conceded that there were divisions in the country regarding the continued existence of the unit.

Reacting on Twitter, Sani said that the Northern governors’ claim that SARS was performing well in the region was not backed by evidence.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the Eight Senate, wrote, “Dear Northern Governors,

“If SARS is working in the North why has kidnappings and killings by Bandits and Terrorists continue unabated? #EndsSARS”
