We’ve not been silent on FSARS issue – Governors rebuke critics

Nigerian governors say they have not been silent on the #EndSARS protests going on across the country.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi stated this in a series of tweets.

The tweets were in response to some Nigerians that accused the governors of indifference towards the plight of Nigerian youths that were constantly being harassed by the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

In the tweets he personally signed, Fayemi drew attention to a statement the NGF released on October 5 hailing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu for banning SARS and other tactical squads from routine patrols and stop and search operations.

According to him, this showed that the governors were not indifferent towards ending excesses of the police.

Fayemi wrote, “To those who claim Governors have been silent on the FSARS issue, we spoke long before others jumped on the issue. And we have continued to work on it behind the scenes.”

He added, Understandably, Nigerians from across all walks of life have expressed anger against the operations of now-defunct F/SARS. Before now, Governors under @NGFSecretariat had engaged on this issue.

“Indeed, we avowed our position through a well-reported statement issued on 5th October.”

“Essentially, the idea is not to diminish the essence of the current #EndSARS protests but rather to affirm that we band together and side with Nigerians.

“As decision makers, we recognise our role to work with the Federal Government in bringing a total end to the menace of SARS,” Fayemi further wrote.
