The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) has waded into the ongoing protests to demand an end to police brutality.
Tagged #EndSARS, the campaign to end harassment and brutalisation of young Nigerians by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force was the No. 1 trending hashtag on Twitter globally throughout Friday afternoon.
The UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing reacted to the protests holding simultaneously across the country in a tweet on Friday evening.
She said the “significant protests” signified Nigerians’ desire for “police reform”.
According to her, peaceful protests are “powerful”.
She identified the recently passed Police Act as a “good foundation” to access the needed reforms.
Laing wrote, “Significant protests over #SARS demonstrating Nigerian people’s desire for police reform. Peaceful protests are powerful. Police Act recently passed by @MBuhari provides good foundation to build more accountable community police force.@UKinNigeria@PoliceNG”
