Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have stormed Wereng community of Riyom local government area of Plateau State, killing six persons, including the village head, and injuring several others.

In the Monday night attack, the gunmen reportedly shot indiscriminately as villagers scampered for safety.

The village head, Chungyang Mwadkon, was said to have been shot dead while trying to flee the suspected herdsmen, in the attack that occurred a few days to his coronation.

One of the victims, Lyop David, 35, was reportedly shot in the thigh and another, Mary Francis, 65, was shot in the leg.

Three of the victims were said to be members of the same family.

The Nation quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the attack commenced around 9pm and the assailants were armed with AK-47 rifles.

One of the witnesses, Kim Francis, 32, said that the villagers initially thought that the suspected herdsmen were vigilantes because they were wearing boots and security kits like community police until they began shooting.

Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka, said, “In spite of series of peace meetings we have been holding with the various parties in the communities, we are still experiencing this kind of ugly incident, thereby truncating the peace in the state.”
