Petrol Price: Nigerians Respond To Buhari’s Increase Remarks On Twitter

3 Min Read

Nigerians have lashed out at President Buhari over increment in the price of Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as Petrol.

In the President’s independence broadcast, he disclosed the significant drop in foreign exchange earnings necessitates an increase in the petrol price.

Comparing the nation to its neighbouring oil-producing countries, President Buhari said it makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia.

“Chad, which is an oil-producing country, charges N362 per litre. Niger, also an oil-producing country, sells oil at N346 per litre. Ghana, another oil-producing country, petroleum pump price is N326 per litre. Further afield, Egypt charges N211 per litre. Saudi Arabia charges N168 per litre.

“It makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia.”

However, his remarks have attracted a huge backlash from the citizenry who feel Saudi Arabia has a minimum wage ten times higher than Nigerias’

Here are some reactions culled from Twitter;

@KEdeogho

Is Saudi Arabia the world capital of Poverty?

Always do comparative analysis on Political Economy before you talk.

Do they use fuel to power generators like we do here?

Nothing good can come out of this APC government.

So many Empty brains.

@twittlarge

Maybe they tink most Nigerians think let them… We are wiser now and how can you compare fuel price without comparing minimum wage🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻

@Tee_Classiquem

In reality. Nigeria is sick, tired and dying. It needs a breathe of fresh air.

But the government seems to be ignorant or outrightly wicked. We need a leader.

A good leader who will feel the pulse of the nation and do the needful.

And not a leader who is blind, dead and dumb

@omoshola_shola

It makes no sense for Nigerians not to be secured in Nigeria as Chadians and Saudi Arabians are in their own countries.

-Comparing Nigeria to other countries is a very low stance, he was just embracing his failure as a president

@chrisogbuji

Minimum wage in Saudi Arabia is R4630 (N470,000) Mr Festus Keyamo should help his boss to work out the maths.

We are willing to buy fuel at N168 if Minimum wage is N400,000. Mad sadists everywhere.People without conscience. Someone who has been living off Govt money all his life

@omoshola_shola replied @chrisogbuji

They feed him with half information

@elbeebaba24

Yeah a Saudi that pays minimum wage of about N700,000 and Nigeria 18,000 Naira you want to compare Saudi and Nigeria

@Medic_Jonny

Yes,because we are on d same minimum salary scale and we share d same standard of living,this man needs a life transplant
