The Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration in Ondo State has promoted a total of 31,066 public servants between 2017 and 2020, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Dr. Afolabi Adewakun, disclosed this at a news conference in Akure on Tuesday.
Adewakun said that 6,941 workers were promoted in 2017, 7,075 2018, 9,704 in 2019, and 7,346 in the current year.

He stated that the latest promotion exercise, which ought to have taken place earlier in the year, was delayed due to the effect of coronavirus.

Adewakun said that the exercise at ministries, departments, and agencies was based on the non-appearance of officers, adding that their records were thoroughly scrutinized before recommending them to the commission for promotion.

“This year’s promotion exercise for all senior officers on grade level 7 to grade level 17 in the mainstream civil service was conducted and concluded by the commission between July and August.

“As a result of the exercise, a total of 1,292 deserving officers were promoted.
It was based on the promotion briefs forwarded to the commission by the Service Matters Department and Office of Establishments and Training as well as the various ministries and extra-ministerial departments (MEDs).

“It is pertinent to state that the same promotion exercise took place in all the self-accounting agencies, boards, and parastatals of government, where a total of 6,054 officers were promoted.
“Thus, the grand total of the officers promoted in 2020 is 7,346 across the state public service,” he said.

Adewakun said that the welfare of workers had continued to be a matter of importance to the governor since the inception of his administration.

He added that the government also employed 23 physically- challenged persons into the civil service and posted them to areas of special needs, as approved by the governor.

Adewakun said that 130 officers across various cadres in the civil service had also been given approval for retirement, either mandatorily or voluntarily, after meritorious service to the state.
