Justice Ayo Salami has reportedly said he should have continued eating his “tuwo” in retirement instead of taking up the job of Chairman of the Special Presidential Panel investigating suspended EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.
Salami, who is a former President of the Court of Appeal, stated this on Friday during a sitting of the panel on Friday, Premium Times reported, quoting two lawyers present at the sitting.
Tuwo is a northern delicacy of thick pudding prepared from local rice, maize or millet.
Journalists are barred from witnessing the proceedings of the panel constituted in July to probe allegations of corruption and insubordination against Magu.
Two lawyers representing Magu, Tosin Ojaoma and Zainab Abiola, said that Salami expressed regret for taking the job.
However, the retired justice did not state his reasons.
“We all sat down as lawyers, after a little period, Justice Salami said he regretted working in this panel.
“As soon as the proceedings opened, Salami was full of regrets, he (Salami) brought out his handkerchief and said he is full of regret taking up the job. Then our team asked him, is it because the panel is yet to find evidence against our client, (Magu)?
“Mr. Salami did not respond; he only kept saying he regrets taking up the job,” Abiola said.

According to Premium Times, Ojaoma corroborated Abiola’s account.
“Mr Salami kept saying he feels embarrassed for talking up the job. He also lamented that for years after he had retired he was seated in his home eating Tuwo (a popular food from the northern part of Nigeria),” Ojaoma said.
