Nigerians react angrily to suspension of planned strike, blast NLC, TUC

3 Min Read

The agreement between organised labour and the Federal Government which caused the suspension of the strike proposed to commence Monday has elicited strong reactions from Nigerians.

The strike was called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and affiliate unions to protest the hike in electricity tariff and petrol pump price.

The planned strike was suspended for two weeks early Monday morning through a communique read by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.

Also, the Federal Government suspended the application of the cost-reflective electricity tariff adjustments for two weeks while the hike in pump price of petrol remained.

However, many Nigerians have taken to social media to take a swipe at organised labour for suspending the strike without securing reversal of the hike in petrol pump price.

Adahor Orix Emmanuel wrote, “Neither labour nor government represents the interest of the people.

“They are all playing on our intelligence.

“Government suspended the unknown hike in electricity tariff yet retained the known extraneous hike in pump price and the planned industrial action suspended. Who is fooling who?”

Joshua Onoakpojemero Eghwogbuwevwi wrote, “You reduce electricity tariff plan not PMS price. Of what benefit is this to the nation and her people?

“I’m disappointed in this administration, most especially in NLC & TUC.”

Uzoegbu Princewill wrote, “We are talking about fuel pump price and electricity and this useless NLC are talking about electricity only.”

Femi Ladapo wrote, “Electricity tariff? For two weeks? That’s nothing. We’ve been conned again.”

Emmanuel Aduwak Shebayan wrote, “And after two weeks, what next? FG has succeeded in finding a way to celebrate her fruitless Nigeria @60.”

Usen Innocent wrote, “Electricity price suspension doesn’t bother me that much. I have been living without electricity for over 3 months now.

“If they had reversed petrol price, it would have helped me to continue to power my generator. We can organise protest without NLC and TUC.”

Ken Marts wrote, “NLC is a goner, a toothless dog. Empty barrel. Dead and buried long ago. Bunch of fake people, with nothing upstairs. They keep deceiving the masses, fighting for their pocket. NLC, a complete failure!!”

Odudu Paul wrote, “We are not surprised in anyway, we already know what this labour leaders can do.”

Chuks Kelvin Olodu queried, “What if Nigerians don’t need NLC and TUC to represent our interest?

“What if we can occupy the streets ourselves until our demands are met?”
