Breast Cancer: Why Self Examination is Important

4 Min Read

Breast cancer is one prevalent condition that has affected many individuals, particularly women, for several years with 70% of the cases leading to death. For this sole reason, breast cancer sensitization has become very important.

Everyday, we come across contents that aim at spreading awareness about this dreadful condition, yet, the number of cases still increase by the day – one cannot help but wonder why. The truth is, many of us do not give this issue as much priority as it deserves. You shouldn’t wait until yourself or someone close to you is affected before you act – the aim is to prevent not to cure.

Breast cancer occurs in the breast cells, fibrous connective tissue or fatty tissues within the breasts and it is caused by a mutation of cell regulating genes. The mutation causes the cells to multiply in an uncontrollable manner, spreading them to other healthy breast tissues and lymph nodes in the armpit.

During the very early stages, breast cancer does not deflect any symptoms because the tumors are usually too small to be felt. As it progresses, the size increases and a lump or tissue thickening surfaces. It usually comes with a host of other symptoms such as:

  • pain or discomfort in the breasts
  • reddish skin in affected area
  • swelling
  • nipple discharge
  • Flaky or peeling skin on the breast
  • an alarming change in breast size
  • an inverted nipple
  • lump in the armpit
  • skin changes in breast area.

This is why it is important to always do self examinations. Although the symptoms or lumps are not necessarily a result of cancer, one must make certain of it. If you do not feel sure about performing self examinations then visit you must doctor immediately you notice any strange symptoms.

How to go about Self examination

Importance of Breast self examination for breast cancer

Breast self-exam is best done a few days after your monthly period starts. If you’ve reached menopause, pick a day every month.

  1. Lie straight down on your back. This makes it easier to feel breast tissues properly.
  2. Using your right hand to support your head, gently but firmly press, using small circular motions with two left fingers, the entire breast to examine for any unusual lumps or thickening. Repeat for the other breast.
  3. The next thing to do is feel your armpit. You can do this while standing or sitting.
  4. Firmly but gently squeeze both nipples to check for any discharge.
  5. Stand straight in front of a mirror with your arms down on both sides to observe for any skin changes, dimpling, indentation, peeling, changes in size, puckering etc.
  6. Lastly check if the nipples are inverted.

If you notice any changes or symptoms that raise alarm, visit the hospital at once! As was stated earlier, the symptoms might not necessarily be a cancer indication, but as they say ” Prevention is better than cure”. It is much easier to control and get rid of this disease at a fairly early stage than when it has, in fact, spiraled beyond control.
