Alhaji Kawu Haliru, Emir of Lafiagi in Edu Local Government area of Kwara state, has called for the relocation of the residents of flood prone areas in the state due to the recent flooding in the area.
Haliru made the call on Tuesday in Lafiagi when he received the state government delegation led by the state deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, to sympathize with the victims of flooding in the town.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the flood rendered many residents of the community homeless.
The call for relocation, the emir said, became necessary due to the recurrence of the disaster in the areas
According to him, the early prediction of imminent heavy rain in some states, in which Kwara is among, put the area at risk.
“This has been a yearly occurrence in my communities and I want to appeal to government at all levels; federal, state and local governments to please come to our assistance by relocating the peoples in flood-prone areas to safe places permanently”, he said.

He explained that many people had lost their belongings, including farmland to the recurring flood.
One of the victims at Chewuru village near Lafiagi, Mr Saliu Umoru, expressed his readiness to relocate to an area where they would have peace of mind.
“We are appealing to the government and all our representatives within the government to come to our rescue by providing another abode for us,” he said.
The deputy governor assured the emir and the victims of the flood of government support.
“We are here to express our sympathy to your royal highness and all the victims of the flood and we are assuring you of government support soonest,” he said.(NAN)
