WTO job: Africa’s richest man backs Okonjo-Iweala’s candidature

1 Min Read

Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has thrown his considerable weight behind former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in her bid for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Okonjo-Iweala is among eighth candidates seeking to replace Roberto Azevêdo, the sixth WTO DG billed to leave office in 2021.

The candidates were screened in July at the WTO General Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

Aside Dangote, the organised private sector in Nigeria also backed Okonjo-Iweala’s candidature.

Taking to his Twitter handle on Tuesday, Dangote described a vote for the Nigerian candidate as a “vote in the right direction”.

In these challenging times @WTO needs the renowned skills and tested experience of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala @NOIweala to lead the organisation through identified obstacles and strengthen its position as the prime facilitator of international trade.

A vote for her by all is a step in the right direction. I fully endorse the candidature of @NOIwealato lead@WTO”
