(Photos): Jonathan Gives Important Update To ECOWAS Heads Of State On Mali’s Situation

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan today briefed an extraordinary session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on efforts to resolve the political impasse in Mali.

The former president disclosed this in a series of tweets on Friday.

Recall that Jonathan was in July appointed Special Envoy of ECOWAS to Mali, following political unrest which later culminated in the ousting of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in a coup.

Keita, popularly known as IBK, was ousted on August 19 and placed in detention.

However, a spokesman for the nation’s new military rulers, Djibrila Maiga, on Thursday said, “President IBK is free in his movements, he’s at home.”

In a terse statement he personally signed, the special envoy said the meeting centred around the outcome of recent engagements with the military rulers who are now in charge of affairs in Mali.

I am pleased that our mediation, buoyed by the determination of ECOWAS leaders to act decisively to achieve the restoration of constitutional order in Mali is already bearing fruits, following the release of ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta,” Jonathan stated.
