Authorities said workers attended 40 incidents of storm damage in the worst-hit city of Cork.

Weather forecasters warned of more heavy rain and strong winds from Storm Ellen until Friday.

The Irish National Electricity Company (ESB) said 194,000 homes and businesses were without power early Thursday, with 130,000 premises still cut off by mid-morning.
Prime Minister Michael Martin commended the emergency services, which did so much through StormEllen to protect communities across the country.

Earlier, weather forecaster Met Eireann issued a red alert on Cork and nearby areas and a third-level yellow alert for much of the country for Thursday and early Friday.

However, there were no reports of casualties, but some roads were blocked and train services were disrupted.

Local authorities also warned of the risk of tidal flooding in low-lying areas of Cork.
